Government Island was once a sandstone quarry. Stone from the site was used in the construction of the U.S. Capitol, the White House and other historic Washington buildings. Today, the 17-acre property is a scenic nature preserve and archaeological site.
What to Explore at Government Island
Visitors can explore:
- A boardwalk through wetland habitat
- A wooded island trail
- Interpretive signs explaining the quarry's history
- Opportunities to observe birds and other wildlife
- Approximately 1.5 miles of trails
Hours, Admission, and Getting There
As of October 10, 2026, published seasonal hours are 8:00 a.m.–8:00 p.m. daily through October 31, and admission is free. Confirm conditions and hours before traveling.
